Looking for Postgraduate Student Representative Position
Postgraduate Student Representative Position
The QMRG are seeking nominations for Postgraduate Student Representative positions on the QMRG committee. The current incumbents, Matt Mason and Fangyuan Li, are due to complete their term shortly.
PGR Representative Role Description
PGR representatives are responsible for representing the interests of PGRs and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) within Quantitative Geography. The role includes:
- Attending monthly QMRG committee meetings
- Organising a PGR- and ECR-focused session at the RGS-IBG annual international conference
- Organising semi-regular PGR-focused seminars (given the increased interest from PGR students and the QMRG committee in recent months, this will likely be part of the role)
Current Experience – Matt Mason and Fangyuan Li
We have both thoroughly enjoyed our time as postgraduate representatives for the QMRG. We would recommend the position to mid-stage PhD students interested in developing their networks and strengthening their academic skills outside their doctoral research. The position is flexible, with support from the other members of the committee, and offers the opportunity to shape the role as you see fit.
The most enjoyable aspect of the role during our tenure has been organising sessions at the RGS-IBG annual international conference. Organising the sessions each year provides great experience in how conferences operate behind the scenes and is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and expand our networks. It’s great to connect with the wider PhD community of quantitative geographers and to provide a space for them to share their work, receive useful feedback, and meet researchers at a similar stage in their doctoral journeys.
We feel we have learnt a lot from our time as PGR representatives, and it has given us the chance to develop our networks across quantitative geography and to strengthen our organisational skills, particularly in relation to conference sessions. If you would like to discuss this role further with us, please get in touch by email (see below).
